Manager Confirms Aston Villa Transfer Talks with Steven Gerrard

Ryan Lowe, the manager of Preston North End, has revealed that he has spoken with Steven Gerrard about Cameron Archer.

Archer is now on loan at Preston from Aston Villa, and his first loan spell away from B6 has gone well thus far. In a twelve games for Preston, he has five goals and is looking the part in the Championship.

Archer made his name with a hat-trick against Barrow AFC in a Carabao Cup match earlier this season, and he backed that up with a goal against Chelsea in the next round.

The 20-year-old also scored against senior opposition in EFL Trophy games, earning him a new contract before being loaned out to Preston. His previous contract was set to expire at the end of the season.

“Archer is good enough for the Championship, he’ll play in the Premier League,” Lowe said via BirminghamLive’s colleagues at LancsLive. “I spoke to Steven about him today and I’ll keep doing. We are looking for any talent that can help Preston North End get better.”

Archer may be enticed by a return to the Championship, and Gerrard and Lowe, who are both from Liverpool, are close friends. Bundesliga clubs are reportedly interested in Archer, but the player may prefer to stay at Villa in the summer and compete for a spot in Gerrard’s first-team setup.

With Lowe’s side still in play-off contention, a lot will depend on how Preston closes the season. They are ten points behind Blackburn Rovers in sixth place, but they have a game in hand and will face Tony Mowbray’s side next month.

Archer made an immediate impact after joining Preston in January, scoring on his debut against West Bromwich Albion. He scored four goals in six games, but he has only scored one in Preston’s last five games.
