As the pair prepare to face old club Liverpool tommorow, Steven Gerrard is hopeful that Aston Villa will sign Philippe Coutinho on a permanent basis.

Coutinho departed Anfield for Barcelona in January 2018 for a reported £142 million, but the Reds have not looked back since.

Liverpool reinvested funds to recruit Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker, and Jurgen Klopp’s side went on to win the Champions League and Premier League this season, as well as challenging for the quadruple.

Coutinho, on the other hand, failed to make an impression at Barcelona and was loaned to Villa in January.

The Brazilian has four goals and three assists for Gerrard’s side thus far, although he was benched for Saturday’s 3-1 win over Burnley.
