Captain of the Guinea Bissau national team, Jonas Azevedo Mendes on Wednesday sparked uproar amidst the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
The Wild Dogs captain, had in the early hours of Wednesday 19 vowed that, he and his teammates will rather die than lose to Super Eagles of Nigeria.
Jonas Azevedo Mendes’ comment has garnered massive reactions with Nigerians creating memes with his picture and that of Ghanaian pallbearers on social media.
The cryptic statement continue to gain momentum as Nigerian national team eventually beat the Wild Dogs 2-0 to head into the knockout rounds on Wednesday night.
Many have been wondering why Jonas Azevedo Mendes made such a cryptic comment earlier before their defeat. However, Olainfo is suggesting that the statement has connections with a recent reports from the leader of the Guinea.
In December 2021, Guinea’s interim head of state, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya gave the national team two options of winning the 2022 AFCON or return the money invested on them.
Olainfo learnt that, Guinea Bissau has never won AFCON since 1976 when they only tried their best to be in a runner-up place.
According to the report, their government had spent around $6 million on the players are will be left with no other option but return it if they eventually fail to win the game.
Colonel Mamady Doumbouya is a Guinean military officer who became interim president through a coup d’état in September, 2021 after overthrowing a sitting president, Alpha Condé.
The captain could made the statement for the fear of returning the $6 million invested on the team or otherwise. “My opinion tho” 😁
