Francis Arthur Nzeribe was a Nigerian politician who became a lawmaker at the upper chamber. He represented as a senator for Orlu Senatorial District in Imo State. He served from October 1983 to December 1987 and May 1999 to May 2007 under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.

Nzeribe, a multi-billionaire investment mogul, was born in Oguta, Imo State on 2 November 1938. His father, Oyimba Nzeribe, was a lawyer and former state counsel, and his grandfather, Akpati Nzeribe, held the traditional title of Ogbuagu, Oshiji, Damanze Oyimba of Oguta. His second wife is the sister of Hajia Asabe Yar’Adua, wife of the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, who was brother of President Umaru Yar’Adua.

Arthur Nzeribe Education and Personal Life Career

According to Wikipedia, Francis Arthur Nzeribe attended Bishop Shanahan College, Orlu and Holy Ghost College, Owerri. In 1957, he traveled to Lagos where he obtained employment with Nigeria’s port authority as an engineering cadet, and a year later, he received a scholarship from the NPA to study marine engineering. He took courses at Portsmouth College of Technology and later attended Chesterfield College of Technology in England.

He was selling life insurance to black immigrants in the United Kingdom by 1960. When he returned to Nigeria in 1961, he worked briefly for Shell and then as an Air Force cadet for a few months. Following that, he worked at Gulf Oil’s Escravos facility.

Nzeribe left Gulf Oil soon after and relocated to London, where he founded Jeafan, a public relations agency with one Ghanaian and two English partners. The firm works with the Ghana High Commission and other African diplomatic offices in London. Nzeribe, who was well-dressed and well-mannered, was able to acquire the trust of a few famous clients.

He met Ghana’s Kwame Nkrumah through the Ghana Commission and began working for him in public relations. He was also introduced to other African leaders by Nkrumah. Nzeribe and Jeafan briefly lost authority in Ghana after the National Liberation Council (NLC) ousted Nkrumah in 1966, but the NLC leadership quickly turned to Jeafan to help enhance the public image of their rule. Nzeribe established a professional relationship with him.

Nzeribe founded the Fanz Organization in London in 1969, specializing in heavy construction, armaments, oil brokerage, publishing, and property investment, with a strong presence in the Middle East and Gulf states. Fanz had a £70 million yearly sales turnover by 1979. As of 2018, he is estimated to be worth over 1.5 billion dollars.

Nzeribe established Sentinel Assurance and other businesses in Nigeria. Heaven of Peace is the name of his rural house in Oguta, which has many mansions. He spent N12 million in 1983 to secure a Senatorial seat in Orlu. He was a significant supporter of General Ibrahim Babangida’s Association for a Better Nigeria ten years later.

Arthur Nzeribe Political/ Senator Career

Senator Arthur Nzeribe was elected as a senator to the Imo Orlu district in 1999 and re-elected in 2003. Senator Nzeribe was suspended indefinitely by Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim in November 2002, following an allegation of a N22 million scam. Nzeribe was rumored to be considering impeachment proceedings against Anyim.

The Orlu People’s Consultative Assembly, chaired by Imo State Governor Achike Udenwa, organized a “One Million March” in April 2006 to rally support for Nzeribe’s recall from the Senate. He was beaten by Osita Izunaso in the PDP primaries for the 2007 Senatorial candidates in December 2006.

In August 2007 Nzeribe was appointed a member of the Board of Trustees of the PDP.
