Eddie Howe to Make Newcastle United Duo  Call Ahead of Sunday’s Match

Newcastle United duo are back in training but it remains to be seen how much of a part they will play at the Etihad Stadium.

Eddie Howe is expected to make a late decision on Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson ahead of Sunday’s crucial match against Manchester City. When he meets with the press at Benton today, the manager will give supporters an update on both of his returning players’ engagement at City.

The duo has trained this week, but Howe must assess whether they are totally prepared with bench roles not yet ruled out by United gaffer. Wilson has returned from a calf injury that kept him out since December, and Trippier has recovered from a fractured metatarsal suffered during Aston Villa game.

Wilson presented his case for selection in an interview with the BBC podcast yesterday, saying: “I am fully charged. I’m back now [in] training. It’s been a good week. It’s been a long time coming but we’re there.”

But, as he did last week, Howe will speak with his sports science team and take a careful approach. Back then, Trippier was training at the time and yearning for a chance to play against Liverpool.

Last Friday, however, Howe claimed that he would be patient even if it meant the duo would have to wait until pre-season. In the last three games, Trippier and United have fighting for a place in the top ten in the last three games.

Both players, however, are looking to attract Gareth Southgate’s attention for the UEFA Nations League matches. The Three Lions will go to Hungary and Germany, as well as games at Wolverhampton against Italy and Hungary.
