Aston Villa Ready to Smash Transfer Record on ‘Huge’ Signing in ‘Massive’ New Spree

Aston Villa are preparing to smash their transfer record again this summer with another “huge” spending spree according to Football Insider.

The Midlands giants will be one of the biggest spenders again in the main window despite massive outlays in recent years.

According to a Villa source, owners Naseef Sawiris and Wes Edens are willing to pay a “massive” renovation and fully support Steven Gerrard.

Behind the scenes, Gerrard has made it obvious that he does not believe the present squad is up to the task and that significant changes are required.

Villa are expected to spend over £150 million on new signings, breaking their previous transfer record.

Emiliano Buendia, signed for £33 million last summer, was one of many big-money acquisitions in recent summers who failed to live up to expectations.

There will be some high-profile departures to make room in the squad and on the wage bill, including some who arrived for large sums in recent window transfers.

As Football Insider first reported shortly after Gerrard took over, the manager was concerned about a lop-sided squad with too many wide attacking players.

Philippe Coutinho signed on a loan-to-buy deal from Barcelona in January, and Lucas Digne joined for £25 million from the same club.

Edens and Sawiris have sanctioned spending of more than £320m on transfers since promotion from the Championship in 2019.

It has been made clear Gerrard will be handed further “massive” funds, the source added, to strengthen a squad that has underperformed again this season.
